Landscapes of peripheral and displaced urbanism
This report focused on the peripheral and historically displaced areas of the extended northern Gauteng city region. Although some of these areas are centers of mining production, others are historical suppliers of labour with limited to no discernible economies. With that said, the case study areas have since the dawn of democracy been transforming their condition of displacement into those of ‘displaced urbanism’ as they variously receive investment in shopping malls and complexes, roadside smaller businesses and facilities for universal public services.
