Extended urbanisation- peripheries survey

This project builds on the GCRO Quality of Life survey conducted between February and June 2019. That peripheries survey (GCRO, 2019) focussed on the ‘core urban’ areas of the former KwaNdebele, Rustenburg and the Mabopane Station. The peripheries survey data was used for the project ‘Landscapes of peripheral and displaced urbanisms’ and several related publications. That peripheries survey (GCRO, 2019) was also used by Masters students from Wits (School of Architecture and Planning) and University College London (Urban Laboratory) for their joint course on extended urbanisation. Thus, the peripheries surveys prove to be an invaluable resource for the continuing GCRO research work in the core urban areas of and adjoining Gauteng, including eMalahleni, Secunda, Sasolburg, Blyvooruitzicht, which is an entry point into the historically distressed townships of Khutsong and Wedela. The periphery's surveys will also be useful for the teaching of and research on the theme of extended urbanisation. The survey data points are compared with the results from selected GCRO Quality of Life results and the South African Census to compare the lived experiences and associated temporal changes within the different core urban areas. Although some of these areas are located outside the Gauteng province, data on the daily commuting and/or transportation of goods across the Gauteng city region is useful for a deeper understanding of the province’s economic and social lives.
