Workshop on the ‘Green Economy’

Over the last few years the idea of a ‘Green Economy’ has begun to feature prominently in political statements, as well as policy and strategy commitments. In January 2011, the Central Strategy Unit at the City of Johannesburg, requested the Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO) to present a Municipal and Provincial Workshop on the ‘Green Economy’. Through presentations and multi-stakeholder discussions, the workshop aimed at building a better understanding of the idea of a ‘Green Economy’ in light of its different interpretations and in relation to other key concepts such as ‘green infrastructure’, ‘sustainability’ and ‘ecosystem services’. The GCRO assisted in building a financial case for including Green Economy strategies in the next round of municipal IDPs, and defining possible points of inter-governmental collaboration around Green Economy strategies in the areas of strategic research, shared learning and joint programmes of action.

Two presentations from the workshop are available for download (click on the links below; or right click and select save target as (in Internet Explorer) or save link as (in Firefox) to save to a file)):
