Top 25 entries for the Written Pieces Competition on the “Coloured” Community in Post-Apartheid Gauteng
The Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO) has finalised the selection of the top 25 entries for the written pieces competition under the “Coloured” Community in Post-Apartheid Gauteng” project.
The successful authors are thanked and congratulated for sharing their voices with the project. They are: Arends Sharon, Arendse Danille Elize, Botes Tamia Bianca, Cockrell Deborah, Crisp Tamrin, Dearham Kim Elisia, Emecheta Christian, Fisher Caelyn, Hermans Charlize, Jacobs Patrick, Julius Chadwin, Louw Angelo, Mhlanga Khethiwe, Modise Ramela, Mooi Adele, Petersen Taylor, Prokopis Tasnim, Ramsamy Ladene, Scheepers Mark, Smith Amani, Wangra Robyn, Watson Jhahne, Zulu Nkosinathi.
The GCRO received over 100 entries of high-quality writing, demonstrating a keen public interest in this project. The judges found that many entries stood out for their insight, creativity and contribution to ongoing conversations about identity, place and belonging in post-apartheid Gauteng. All the contributions received are greatly appreciated and required keen introspection to arrive at the top 25 entries.
As a gesture of appreciation, each selected author has been offered either a R500 Pick N Pay or Exclusive Books voucher.
Looking ahead, the GCRO will host a launch event for the Written Pieces Publication in April 2026, where contributors will be invited to attend. At this event, the top five entries will be announced and awarded additional vouchers ranging from R500 to R2000.
Through this publication, GCRO aims to honour and amplify the voices of those who have contributed their stories and creative expressions, and to deepen public understanding of the lived experiences of the “Coloured” community in Gauteng today.
