Procurement Workshop at ICEGOV

The 17th edition of the International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance – ICEGOV 2024 was held in Pretoria, South Africa> The Gauteng City-Region Observatory presented a workshop on public procurement reform. The workshop showcased early stage work that the GCRO was doing to support ethical and developmental procurement.

The GCRO provided three inputs and demonstrations:

GCRO Team

  • Laven Naidoo provided a demonstration on using machine learning to flag potentially corrupt transactions in the procurement process.
  • Phemelo Mahamuza showed how satellite imagery can be used to track procurement spending on infrastructure.
  • Ebrahim-Khalil Hassen outlined the conceptual framework, design criteria and logic guiding the development of these demonstration projects.

The workshop was attended by over 100 participants, which included conference participants from India and South Korea. The interactive sessions provided a way to learn from these and other experiences. The South African participants in particular welcomed the demonstration projects and its possible applications in government institutions.
