On 1 September 2015, GCRO Researcher Guy Trangoš presented a paper at the fifth biannual EUGEO conference, hosted this year in Budapest from 30 August to 3 September.

The conference occurred at a fitting time for Hungary, as the country faces increasing criticism of its strong stance against European immigration in light of the ongoing 'crisis'. This year's EUGEO was the biggest in its existence, with over 600 presenters from all over the world.

Guy's paper, 'Claiming Johannesburg: Urban heritage and acts of symbolic appropriation', was presented as part of a panel entitled 'Occupy! - Power, Resistance and Commemoration in Public Space', alongside papers from Hungary, Belgium, Japan, and Romania. Guy's paper examined:

'... the tensions inherent in the post-apartheid heritage debate, specifically exploring the symbolic landscape of inner city Johannesburg. The paper critically examines a specific protest and act of symbolic activism, #BewareOfColour, which gained prominence during the second half of 2014, and dissects the heritage debate it sparked.'

Guy's presentation at the conference covered aspects of a larger paper to be submitted for journal publication in September 2015.
