GCRO Shines at ISQOLS Regional Conference in Tshwane

The Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO) made a significant impact at the inaugural Regional ISQOLS Regional Conference: - Africa, held from October 3-5, 2024, in Tshwane. The conference, themed “Well-being and Happiness in a Democratic World,” brought together leading researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to discuss advancements in quality of life and well-being research. GCRO’s contributions were highlighted in a special session focused on urban and regional well-being.

Key presentations included:

Shamsunisaa Miles-Timotheus and Dr. Pedzisai Ndagurwa offered valuable insights on the Quality of Life Survey. They discussed the planning, implementation, and analysis of the Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO) Quality of Life Survey, shedding light on the socio-spatial dynamics of the Gauteng City-Region.

Caryn Abrahams and Dr. Darlington Mushongera presented on socio-spatial inequality and its impact on the quality of life in the Gauteng City - Region. The GCRO's Quality of Life survey data also featured in presentations in other session throughout the conference, including:

Christian Hamann presenting on "Microscale segregation and socio-economic sorting in Gauteng".

Frederik Booysen and Ferdi Botha presenting on "Socio-economic status and the family’s role in achieving health and well-being for all".

Uma Kollamparambil presenting on "Subjective time poverty and life satisfaction in a high income- and spatial-inequality context: A gendered analysis".

The session underscored GCRO’s commitment to leveraging data and research to inform policy and improve the well-being of residents in the Gauteng City-Region. The conference provided an excellent platform for GCRO to share its findings and collaborate with international experts on strategies to enhance urban well-being.
