In December 2016 the Government of Moscow hosted the BRICS City Lab on Adaptive and Transformative Governance at the Moscow Metropolitan Governance University. This three-day conference brought together academics and government officials from Brazil, Russian, India, China, and South Africa to address common issues and compare experiences. The first BRICS City Lab was held in 2015 in Shanghai.

Three GCRO staff members were invited to present at the conference by Prof. Phil Harrison, SARCHi Chair in Spatial Analysis and City Planning, who coordinated the meeting. GCRO Executive Director Rob Moore’s presentation was entitled “The importance of adaptive governance“; Thembani Mkhize discussed youth challenges to adaptive governance in Johannesburg; and Jesse Harber profiled the GCRO’s work in supporting evidence-based policy making.

The next BRICS City Lab will be hosted in 2017 by an organization from one of the other BRICS countries.
