GCRO Partners with the Urban 20 (U20) 2025 Initiative
We are excited to announce that the Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO) will be a partner organization in the Urban 20 (U20) 2025 cycle, which the cities of Tshwane and Johannesburg will co-chair. This is a historic moment, as it marks the first time the G20 is being held in Africa, with South Africa serving as the G20 Presidency.
The U20 2025 cycle will focus on four key priorities:
- Economic Opportunities and Financing
- Climate Action and Urban Resilience
- Social Inclusion and Equity
- Digital Transformation and Innovation
The appointment of Johannesburg and Tshwane as U20 Co-Chairs is a testament to Africa's rising global influence and its commitment to sustainable urban development. As they take on this leadership role, the world will witness the transformative power of African cities in shaping a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future.
The U20 initiative collaborates with various organizations to promote sustainable urban development. In Johannesburg, key partners include the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), the African Centre for Cities (ACC), the South African Cities Network (SACN), the Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO), Metropolis, and UN Habitat (Africa). Other significant collaborators are the Global Fund for Cities Development and the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. The C40 network comprises partners such as the ITF, the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, Slum Dweller International, UNEP, ILO, ITUC, and the Climate Group. The UCLG network collaborates with IIED, the Open Government Partnership, the World Economic Forum, the Culture2030goal Campaign, UNDRR, OECD, and UNESCO. Public Services International is also a key partner.
Together, Tshwane and Johannesburg are not just leading cities; they are spearheading a movement. This movement redefines urban governance, prioritizes people and the planet, and ensures that no city is left behind.
