Experts Debate Future of Urban Data Science in South Africa at UKESA Webinar
A dynamic panel discussion hosted by the Urban Knowledge Exchange Southern Africa (UKESA) recently brought together leading voices in urban data science to explore innovative approaches shaping the future of South African cities. The webinar, titled “Urban Data Science in Practice,” showcased three distinct platforms driving data-informed urban planning and development.
The event featured insights from the Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO), the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and the South African Cities Network (SACN), each presenting unique models for harnessing urban data.
Dr. Laven Naidoo of GCRO introduced a hybrid platform integrating AI, machine learning, and geospatial data to address urban and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) challenges. A Y-rated NRF scientist and lecturer at the University of Pretoria, Dr. Naidoo emphasized the role of Earth Observation in shaping smarter cities.
Carike Karsten, senior engineer at CSIR, presented proprietary urban growth modelling tools designed to support municipal decision-making. Her work focuses on developing predictive models that help cities plan for sustainable expansion.
Majaha Dlamini of SACN showcased SCODA, an open-access data platform aimed at promoting transparency and innovation in urban development. With a background in urban studies and data governance, Dlamini highlighted the importance of open data in fostering inclusive city planning.
The panel engaged in a lively debate on the benefits, challenges, and real-world applications of each approach, offering valuable perspectives on how data science is transforming urban landscapes across South Africa.
