Brian Murahwa participates in podacast hosted by Charles Leonard
In this podcast hosted by Charles Leonard, a journalist working with the UJ’s Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS), and Brian Murahwa discussed the often unheralded and overlooked identity of city life, sound in general and sound produced by religious actors as they attempt to make claims to urban space. In the recent years, Hillbrow has seen a growing presence of Pentecostal religious institutions whose ‘violent’ appropriation of the neighbourhood’s soundscape is breeding contestations over space with other actors in the city. They discussed the importance of sound in Pentecostal tradition and why emerging Pentecostal churches are making huge investments in sound technologies. A few days after the podcast was released, it ranked second in the global Podcast charts, the highest the host ever scored.
